I. Introduction

The release of the new version of GOTO Bridge has become a tradition over the years. With more than 50,000 units sold throughout the world since the release of the first software product in 1994, GOTO Bridge has quickly earned a reputation as a must-have in computer bridge.

Our aim with GOTO Bridge has always been to offer the most comprehensive game possible. We believe that we have met this objective and users' requirements, whether players are neophytes or experts, in particular through the availability of numerous game modes.

We have designed this 17th version with the same frame of mind we have been having all these years and we are extremely pleased to share it with you today.

This year is no exception to the rule. You will play with the latest version of Argine, our game engine (the artificial intelligence playing with you and controlling your partner and opponents). Being closer and closer to human behaviour, Argine now supports new bidding conventions and is able to display alerts and jump bids ("stop") like at a real bridge table.

You will discover the new game mode "Bidding sequences explained" which will allow you to better understand the bids made by your partner, your opponents and yourself while playing. Bidding will become familiar territory!

You will benefit from the wise advice of Jérôme Rombaut (reigning European Champion) and Barry Rigal (author, commentator and famous bridge player) in the game mode "Commented Deals". Their comments will help you understand the subtleties of the deals that they have selected for you.

You will also learn from the new lessons, exercises and 500 new quiz questions added to the game mode "Lessons and Exercises". They make GOTO Bridge the ideal software to progress.

Very practical to give bridge lessons or reproduce interesting deals, the "Deal Manager" will be your new must-have tool. You will be able to generate and import your deals as you wish, edit them and play them from any hand.

Thanks to it, you will hold all the cards to face the new international players available in the game mode "Challenge the best players". You will also have the possibility to replay the 2016 European Team Championships staged in Budapest and the 2016 World Bridge Games staged in Wroclaw, and thus pit yourself against great champion teams without any fear.

Finally, we would like to thank you for the trust you have placed in us for so many years and we hope that once again you will enjoy playing bridge with brand new GOTO Bridge XVII.

V. Navigating through the different menus

The software home screen gives you access to the 4 main game modes of GOTO Bridge XVII (Unlimited Deals, Lessons & Exercises, Practice and Tournaments), the deal manager and the game settings. They take the form of playing cards.
Just click on one of those cards to display the different options (submenus) available for each game mode, the deal manager and the game settings. They still take the form of playing cards. Just click on the submenu card you are interested in to access it.
After opening the submenu of your choice, you can always return to the home screen by clicking on the fan or browse the various submenus via the cards that are always shown on the screen.

VI. Deal Manager

The deal manager is a new feature that makes GOTO Bridge XVII the indispensable tool for your bridge lessons.

Thanks to this tool, you can:
  • Generate your deals: select distribution, vulnerability, dealer, bidding sequence and lead.
  • Import your deals, edit them and play them from any hand.
  • Organise, view and save the deals you have created or imported.
  • Print your deals thanks to the customised printing module: print all or part of the deal (bidding, card play and players' hands) and add your own comments.

VII. Unlimited Deals Mode

This mode allows you to play deals as you wish, one after another.
At the end of the deal, you are compared to the GOTO Bridge software which played the same deal as you in the same conditions.
You have access to its bidding sequence and card play to compare yourself to the software in minute detail.

VIII. Lessons and Exercises Mode

This mode allows you to progress while learning. 6 submenus are available in this game mode: bidding, card play, deals commented by Jérôme Rombaut, deals commented by Barry Rigal, bidding sequences explained and quiz.

Bidding

This mode offers you different lessons on bidding.
After clicking “Play”, the software will ask you to select the lesson you are interested in and choose whether you want to read it or to complete the associated exercises.
The button “Read the lesson” allows you to access the selected lesson, whereas the button “Complete exercises” gives you access to the associated exercises.
The section “Performance” of the window displays how your average evolved for the exercises of the lesson selected on the left. You score 100% if you find the right answer at the first attempt and 0% otherwise. You will also find your average for exercises next to each lesson.

Card Play

This mode offers you different lessons on card play.

Deals commented by Jérôme Rombaut and Barry Rigal

In the mode "Commented Deals", you can play deals as you wish, one after another.

At the end of each deal played, the author you have selected will provide you with comments about bidding and card play, allowing you to understand the subtleties of the deal.

Once you have read and assimilated the comments, you can replay the deal in order to put theory into practice.

Commented deals are thus an excellent source of learning and progress.

Bidding sequences explained

This is the main new feature of this year's version. The game mode "Bidding sequences explained" is made for you if you are not very good at bidding and you want to make progress.

The principle is simple: GOTO Bridge will explain each bid made by your partner, your opponents or yourself to help you understand this key bridge phase.

The advantage of this game mode is that you can play as many deals as you want. They are randomly selected and will enable you to analyse hundreds of different cases.

Funbridge Quiz

The mode “Funbridge Quiz” was inspired by the application of the same name launched in 2013 on Apple & Android smartphones and tablets.
Given the success of the app, two new redesigned versions offering 500 new quiz questions each were released in 2015 and 2016.

GOTO Bridge XVII includes the 500 quiz questions from the Funbridge Quiz 3 app. This game mode will enable you to test your knowledge in the form of a quiz divided into 5 topics:
The right hand: which hand is the only one matching South's bids?
The right bid: which bid are you going to make next with South's hand?
Card play: what is your lead?
Defending a contract!: which card are you going to play on this first trick?
Forcing or not forcing?

After clicking the button “Play”, select the type of quiz to play and the desired difficulty level. You can play any quiz by selecting “Any type of quiz” and “Any level”, then click “Confirm”. Or select a topic and a level by clicking on the relevant entries in the pull-down menus, then click “Confirm”.
There are multiple difficulty levels: Easy, Intermediate, Difficult and Expert.
The number of answers you are allowed to give depends on the difficulty level of the quiz (2 for the Easy level and 5 for the Expert level), except for “Find South's hand” where you will always have to choose between 4 hands.
The section “Performance” of the window “Funbridge Quiz” displays how your average evolved for each type of quiz or for all quizzes.
The score you get depends on the number of answers you needed to find the solution.
For instance, in a quiz with 5 attempts:
Correct answer at the 1st attempt -> 5/5 = 1. You score 100%.
Correct answer at the 2nd attempt -> 4/5 = 0.8. You score 80%.
Correct answer at the 3rd attempt -> 3/5 = 0.6. You score 60%.
Correct answer at the 4th attempt -> 2/5 = 0.4. You score 40%.
Correct answer at the 5th attempt -> 1/5 = 0.2. You score 20%.
Failure -> 0/5 = 0.0. You score 0%.

IX. Practice Mode

Since 2014, GOTO Bridge has offered a correction mode, available for each section of the Practice mode described below.

The principle is simple:

At card play, we will show you the best card to play to take the highest number of tricks on the deal. Simply hover the mouse over the card you want to play and we will show you the final result of the contract if you play that card (and the next ones to best serve your interests).

At bidding, we will correct your bidding cards, explaining your mistakes. If the bid selected seems to be incorrect, a dialogue box explaining why will open and will ask you if you want to cancel the bid, confirm it or if you want to get advice from GOTO Bridge.

In case you make a wrong bid or you play a wrong card, GOTO Bridge will suggest a solution. You will then be able to replay your deal from the moment you made a mistake and try the solution. This way, you will get a better score!

Of course, you can enable or disable these options in the side menu of the Practice mode.

This is the ideal mode to improve yourself and progress!

Easy deals for beginners or relaxing practice

This game mode will allow you to play deals with particularly easy and unconfusing bidding and card play.

This is ideal for beginners or players who want to start playing bridge again at their own pace.

At the end of the deal, you are compared to Jérôme Rombaut who played the same deal as you in the same conditions.

The sections “Performance” and “History” give you access to all the deals you played in this game mode, ordered chronologically (History) or by contract type (Performance). You score 100% if you do better than Jérôme Rombaut, 50% if you get the same result and 0% if you do worse than him.

Card Play

The mode “Card Play” allows you to practise card play only since bids are made by the computer.

After clicking the button “Play”, you set the type of contract that you want to play. At the table, you can see the bidding sequence on your right and directly start card play.

As long as you don't return to the menu “Card Play”, the contracts that you will play will be based on your previous settings.

At the end of the deal, you are compared to GOTO Bridge which played the same deal as you in the same conditions.

The sections “Performance” and “History” give you access to all the deals you played in this game mode, ordered chronologically (History) or by contract type (Performance). You score 100% if you do better than Jérôme Rombaut, 50% if you get the same result and 0% if you do worse than him.

Bidding Sequence

The mode “Bidding Sequence” allows you to work on specific bidding sequences or deals with distribution criteria.

This mode offers you 3 options:
• Select your contract: you set the type of contract (part-score, game or slam), the declaring side and the contract suit. GOTO Bridge will provide you with deals in this context.
• Select your bidding sequence: you set the type of bidding sequence that you want to play.
• Select distributions: you set all deal parameters (number of points, number of cards per suit, etc.).

As long as you don't return to the menu “Bidding Sequence”, the bidding sequence that you will play will be the one that you have previously set.

The sections “Performance” and “History” give you access to all the deals you played in this game mode, ordered chronologically (History) or by contract type (Performance). You score 100% if you do better than Jérôme Rombaut, 50% if you get the same result and 0% if you do worse than him.

Unlimited Deals

This mode allows you to play deals as you wish, one after another.

At the end of the deal, you are compared to GOTO Bridge which played the same deal as you in the same conditions.

You have access to its bidding sequence and card play to compare yourself to the software in minute detail.

Create or load a deal

This mode allows you to:
• Create a deal: you can edit your own deals from this menu. The deal editor enables you to set the contract that you want to play as well as card distribution. In that case, after clicking “Play”, you will start card play of the deal.
• Open a file: if you have deals saved in pbn format on your computer, you can open them to play them.

X. Tournaments Mode

The mode “Tournaments” of GOTO Bridge will allow you to compare yourself to other players and to be ranked against the best ones.

Challenge “Argine”

Argine has been the game engine of GOTO Bridge and Funbridge for several years now. This is the artificial intelligence playing at the table with and against you. It has been designed with the aim of being as close as possible to human behaviour.

In this game mode, you will challenge Argine in a 4-deal tournament with IMP scoring.

Will you be able to beat our game engine?

Series Tournaments

The mode “Series Tournaments” of GOTO Bridge allows you to play 10-deal tournaments and to compare yourself to other players who played the same tournaments as you in the same conditions. Based on these comparisons, GOTO Bridge will determine which game level matches your skills among the 10 levels available.

So you start in Series 5 (out of 10), with Series 1 being the highest one and Series 10 being the lowest one. You are thus compared to players having the level of the series in which you are playing.

At the end of a tournament, GOTO Bridge will decide if you will go up or down and thus play in another series according to your average percentage.
To go up to a higher-level series, you must achieve an average percentage of over 60%, whereas an average percentage below 40% will make you go down to a lower-level series.

The left side of the window shows you the list of tournaments played. The right side shows your progression across the different series and your overall average, all series taken together, according to the section selected, i.e. respectively “Progression across series” or “Overall average”.

The button “Game statistics” displays your performance in 4 game areas: “Bidding performance”, “Card performance in defence”, “Card performance in attack” and “Success rate of your contracts”.

The button “Delete tournaments” enables you to reset your scores and start over in Series 5.

Challenge the best international players

The mode “Challenge the best players” allows you to play head-to-head against a selection of players among the best ones in the world.

Select the player you want to challenge from the pull-down menu at the top left of the game mode window.

At the end of each deal, you are compared to the selected player with IMP scoring. You can then review how he played the deal by clicking on his result row and on the magnifying glass. And you access both his bidding sequence and card play.

Your IMP score vs. this player is displayed next to his name. The button “Delete tournaments” enables you to reset this score.

Challenge Elites

Here you will play deals and be compared to players from the Funbridge Elite series (Funbridge is our online bridge game: http://www.funbridge.com). As in the mode previously mentioned, you will be able to compare your bidding sequences and card play with the best Funbridge players.

At the end of each deal, you will be compared to the best Funbridge players.

You can then review how they played the deal by clicking on the result row you are interested in and on the magnifying glasses. And you access both the bidding sequence and card play.

The left side of the window displays the list of the tournaments played against the selected player as well as his achievements.
The right side displays how your score evolved for all the tournaments played in this game mode (section “Performance”).

Card Play Tournaments

The mode “Card Play Tournaments” allows you to compare yourself to other players but only at card play.

At the table, the deals displayed present a bidding sequence (the same for all) and a lead already played (the same for all if you play in attack). You are thus compared on the number of tricks you will take only.

International Championships

This game mode allows you to replay the deals from the greatest international championships.

In the left column, at the top, the pull-down menu allows you to select the championship you are interested in.

Below, for each championship, you will see the various matches offered.
(A match means that 2 players of Team A play as N/S, whereas the other 2 players of the same Team A play the same deal at another table but as E/W. Opponents of Team A are similarly split: 2 per table, against Team A players.)
By clicking on one of the matches, you will find the details of each match deal by deal (Match details) in the right side of the window.

The button “Deal details” gives you access to the details of each deal. You can therefore see what was played at both tables on the same deal.

You can select the deal from the pull-down menu at the top left of the window.
Click “Play deal” to play the deal you are consulting. At the end of the deal, you will see what was played at both tables and in the right column, what you played on the deal.

Bidding Conventions

Here you set your bidding conventions. Select the system at the top of the window, then click “Save”.

Game Configuration

In this menu, you set all display and ergonomics options of the game.

The left window shows you the different options, whereas the right one shows you, where applicable, what your interface will look like according to what you selected for some options. You will find details on relevant options only below. You can see a preview of the other options in the right side of the window.

Parameters are split into the following tabs: cards, attack, defence, bids, review, sounds and animations.

Cards

• Display: 3 options to display South's hand, i.e. fanned out (as if you held the cards in your hand), in a line and by suit (in a line, with gaps between suits).

• Ergonomics (when the box is ticked):
- Highlight the card when you hover the mouse over it.
- Select the suit before playing a card: GOTO Bridge will select the cards of the suit to play for you.
- Take your played card back: if this option is enabled, a button “Take card back” will be displayed at the table for the duration set here.
- Collect tricks: here you can decide whether tricks will be collected automatically after a given time or by a click of the mouse.

Attack:

Switch North and South when North is declarer: when North is declarer in GOTO Bridge, we let you play the contract from North's hand. Here you can choose to switch North and South so that North's hand is displayed at the bottom of your screen in that case.

Defence:

Dummy displayed in East/West: realistic (like at a real table), horizontal (in the direction you read), in a line (dummy is displayed on a single line) and by suit (cards are separated by suit).

Bidding (when the box is ticked):

- Display bidding deductions when hovering the mouse over the bidding box: allows to display how GOTO Bridge assesses the hand which just made the bid. It assesses suit distribution with the minimum or maximum number of cards per suit and gives an estimate of the points in the hand (honours and distribution).
- Bid by clicking on cards: allows you to make the bid at the lowest level in the suit clicked on in your hand.

Review:

This is the interface in which you click on the magnifying glasses to review a deal.

Sounds:

Here you simply enable the sounds you want to hear while playing.
Sounds for which you don't tick the box will not be played.
You can also assign voices of your choice to each position at the table.

Animations:

Here you set the animation speed in the game (i.e. cards, bidding cards, etc.).

Users

If several people at home play GOTO Bridge and you don't want to “mix” your results, here you can create several player profiles.
When launched, GOTO Bridge will ask you which player profile you want to use. Select your profile.
By default, if only one profile is available, it will be displayed as “Unnamed”.

• The button “User Licence” allowing you to enter your registration code if needed.
